I think it’s important to recognize that there will be interruptions to an exercise routine. Having an expectation to pick it up again when you are able is a lot better than assuming that you’ve given it up. I’ve had lots of interruptions, due especially to health issues and Covid gym shut downs. In my case, my joints don’t like aerobic exercise outside of the pool. So when our pool is shut down, my exercise routine shuts down. But I know that getting back in the water really helps me sleep better at night. That’s a better motivation than the abstract concept of being healthy.

Building a regular exercise routine into a habit that will be missed if you stop it--that's an important bit of information. Personally, I'm a confirmed "exercise by myself" person, and am always surprised when someone describes me as "self-motivated."

But whatever motivates you--friends, a teacher, a goal--there are always going to be outside interruptions. Mine was a walk-across-America. Sure, my lower body was getting a good workout, but what about my arms, chest, and back? I found that after months of neglect, (surprisingly) it did not take long to get back to my regular routine. The work you put in today or this year will definitely pay off if you've been interrupted or "fallen off the wagon." You just have to get back on track!
